Thanksgiving is a time for returning to the nest -- more of us travel long distances on this annual pilgrimage to home and hearth than at any other time of year.
My Thanksgivings are always spent surrounded by family, both seen and unseen. I travel from almost as far south in America as it's possible to get -- Orlando, FL -- to almost as far north as it's possible to get -- Boston, MA. Sometimes it’s just me and my parents, and we travel to my aunt's house to have a large Thanksgiving dinner with three generations of her family. Sometimes my brother and his wife, and my sister and her family, converge on us, and we have a houseful of people large and small devour my mother's home-cooked feast. Either way, the holiday is invariably about family more than food. The thing we most often give thanks for is that we were all able to come together for yet another year.
My house is a bit more unusual than others, I guess. I've been told that most Americans don't know much about their ancestors or their heritage, and can rarely name anyone from further back than their grandparents' generation. But my mother has filled the house with pictures of our ancestors -- my teenage grandmother lined up with her 6 siblings, shortest to tallest; my grandfather in his WW1 uniform or with his twin brother; my great grandparents in late 19th century garb. These pictures cluster in a shrine right at the top of the stairs, and also cover the mantelpiece over the fireplace.
In our family, the women have always been the keepers of the family history. Sitting around the kitchen table or driving to our destination, they pass oral tradition down from generation to generation through stories told over the holidays. My mother marks each homecoming by drawing her grandchildren’s attention to the pictures around the living room. Naming each person, she makes them memorable by telling a little story about them. Stories about people in the pictures spawn memories of other, older generations who are not pictured. They become part of the rich ancestral tapestry too.
The result of all this is that our house is always filled with many, many more family members than just those who are physically present. Memories of generations past build up an atmosphere thick with history, interconnectedness, and love. Older members of the family pass on, but they are still felt as a palpable presence as we gather from all over the country to celebrate together.
I don't know about you, but I cherish this feeling -- this sense that I am surrounded by love, and don't really need to miss those who have passed on, because they are still most definitely with me. They always feel especially close at times like Thanksgiving, for all the reasons stated above.

Later on in this letter I’ll explain how others have used and benefited from these tools. But right now, a word of caution...
First, I run into more and more atheists these days who think I'm crazy for suggesting that it is possible to acknowledge and interact in a practical fashion with deities or spirits. If you don't believe such a thing is possible, that's fine. It's healthy to be skeptical and question anything that you haven't experienced for yourself.
For such people, please allow me to recommend you do some reading on Jungian psychology, and the new anthropological science of memetics. If you are not already familiar with these scientific disciplines and relatively new paradigms, I think you will find that they explain a lot about human psychology and experience. Studying these subjects will absolutely enrich your life. It will give you a whole new perspective on personal experience of spirit, and the power and usefulness of working with archetypes -- even if you don't believe in their "actual" existence outside of the human mind.
I have books on these and other related topics listed in the bibliography of On the Care and Feeding of Spirits, and if you give my ideas a second glance with those frameworks in mind I think you will find they are not so crazy after all.
Second, I recognize that some non-atheists carry too much religious baggage with them from previous paths to feel comfortable working with spirits. These people choose to buy into the alarmist slant that insists this kind of work is somehow dangerous. I have news for you. All magick is dangerous, including Christian prayer. That is because practicing any kind of magick, prayer, or meditation will change you completely, body, mind, and spirit. The person you are the day before you set out on the path of the Great Work will soon be dead, replaced by an Awakened being.
If that frightens you, and you have that much willingness to allow others to control your mind and dictate your spiritual path, then get out of magick. Now. You'll be much happier in some New Age fluffy-bunny cult somewhere, where enlightenment can be bought by turning all your worldly possessions over to some guru.
However, most people would consider becoming more enlightened to be a GOOD thing. These people recognize that the child they once were had to be replaced by the adult they are now. I'm an Eclectic Goth Wiccan who moved to Florida from New York City in 1999. One woman, a musician who attended my class on the subject and bought the book, had lost her husband, also a musician. Her friends, family, and therapist all told her the “healthy” thing to do was to put him behind her and move on. But she still felt him close. Sometimes she even felt he was playing through her. She wanted to maintain that connection, but felt guilty about going against the well-meaning advice of those around her. She had some of his instruments in a corner. She just couldn’t bring herself to get rid of them.
I told her how to set up a special, dedicated area in one room, in memory of her husband. She should decorate it with objects that belonged to him or that meant something to both of them, such as wedding photos. I explained how she could use that focus to connect with him whenever she wished. She would feel his love surrounding her. The connection she already felt would be enhanced. It would let him come through more easily when she was playing music. They could continue to create beauty together.
That night reports came to me from independent sources about a woman who had played so beautifully that she seemed to have a glow around her. The music and her mannerisms had changed as she laid down one instrument and picked up another (an instrument she had told me was her husband’s specialty). Her eyes had glowed, I was told. She played with a fire and passion that electrified her audience.
A young couple told me they had a mischievous spirit in the house. It didn’t seem malevolent, so they didn’t want to get rid of it. They just wanted to learn how to communicate with it so they could get it to behave a bit better.
I told them a bit about different kinds of fairy folk. I also referred them to the section of the book that would show them how to open a line of communication with their particular spirit. I suggested leaving an occasional sweet or toy out for their “guest” as a token of good will. This would likely stop its mischief if it liked the gifts. Perhaps it would even start doing good deeds around the house (like helping to find the car keys, instead of hiding them).
Another couple had a young toddler that was plagued by bad dreams. They felt that malevolent spirits were disturbing his sleep. They wanted to find or create a guardian spirit for him. Hopefully it could also serve as an “imaginary” friend and playmate to keep their son company.
I told them about Eleggua, a spirit or orisha in the Santerian pantheon with a child form. I suggested they ask Eleggua to watch over their son. I also told them how my mother had created a guardian spirit for me, based on “Puff, the Magic Dragon.” Puff made such a difference in my childhood, keeping night terrors at bay!
Another person spoke of Drawing Down the Moon (a Wiccan technique). She could feel the Goddess enter her body, thrilling at the power She conveyed by Her presence. But this priestess was frustrated that she just couldn’t seem to remember the lines of ritual she had memorized, lines that the Goddess was supposed to speak.
I pointed out the futility of invoking a Goddess only to try to tell her what She was “supposed” to say! The whole point of bringing a deity down into the physical plane is to listen to what She wishes to communicate, not the other way around. It apparently hadn’t occurred to anyone involved in the creation of the ritual that it was rude to try to tell a Goddess what to do!
